(2027) REPAIR: Tending to the Wounds of Chronic Misattunement. A 16 Week Comprehensive Course on Emotional Neglect.
Updated: Oct 7
The REPAIR Framework is a comprehensive, integrative training for clinicians who want to understand emotional neglect more deeply and approach its healing with greater clarity and confidence. REPAIR is short for: Relational and Experiential Processes for Attachment Integration and Reconsolidation.
Emotional neglect often leaves no single event for a client to point to. Instead, its effects may appear in how they relate to their emotions, needs, identity, and other people - including their therapist. This course offers a grounded clinical framework for recognizing those patterns and understanding how they developed.
Whether your work is grounded in IFS, EMDR, somatic therapy, Coherence Therapy, or another experiential or relational approach, REPAIR helps you bring your existing expertise into a more cohesive clinical map. You’ll explore how chronic misattunement can shape a person’s expectations of care and connection, and how adaptations to emotional neglect can show up both inside and outside of the therapy room.
Across 16 weeks, the course integrates attachment neuroscience, interpersonal neurobiology, memory reconsolidation, and relational healing. The first half builds a thorough understanding of emotional neglect and its lasting effects. The second half focuses on practical ways to facilitate healing. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how to recognize emotional neglect, a framework for deciding where to focus clinically, and more finely tuned skills for doing deep experiential work with clients that directly tends to the wounds of misattunement.

Core curriculum
Understanding emotional neglect
What emotional neglect is and why it is often missed. Recognizing an injury defined by what a child did not receive, including attunement, emotional availability, protection, and help organizing their inner world.
Common family dynamics. Emotional unavailability, chronic misattunement, parentification, and the ways neglect can occur alongside abuse or other adverse experiences.
Attachment and developmental injury. How responsive relationships support emotional awareness, interoception, mentalization, and relational engagement, and how these capacities may be affected when a child repeatedly faces distress alone.
The inner world of the emotionally neglected child. Experiences of invisibility, aloneness, shame, longing, and the meanings children may make about themselves and their needs.
How emotional neglect appears in adulthood. Protective adaptations, dissociation, hypervigilance, low self-worth, compensatory roles, difficulties with emotion, and patterns in intimate relationships.
Recognizing neglect in the therapy room. Understanding intellectualizing, emotional avoidance, distrust of care, and the tension between wanting connection and feeling unsafe receiving it.
Facilitating healing
An integrated clinical map. Distinguishing between developmental injuries that need to be repaired and implicit emotional learnings that need to be unlearned, and understanding how those processes interact.
Deliberate attunement and relational repair. Offering empathy, presence, and responsiveness while helping clients notice what it is like to be seen and accompanied.
Reconnecting clients with their inner experience. Slowing down, supporting felt sense and interoception, and helping clients identify emotions and needs without pushing past protective responses.
Joining clients in emotional pain. Learning to stay with difficult experience rather than rushing to reassure, fix, or redirect it.
Creating experiences that challenge old learning. Drawing on the therapeutic relationship, emotional processing, adult perspective, existing relationships, and parts or inner child work to create experiences that can support memory reconsolidation.
Applying REPAIR across modalities. Using the framework to guide case formulation and clinical choices while bringing existing skills from Coherence Therapy, IFS, EMDR, somatic therapy, AEDP, and other relational or experiential approaches.
